1. What is a Road Roller?
![]()
A road roller is a heavy-duty construction machine, also known as a soil
compactor. It’s a type of road construction equipment used for large-scale
road projects such as highways, railways, airport runways, and dams. It can
also be used for compaction work on narrow surfaces such as trench
foundations, building construction, pipeline backfilling, and sports fields.
It is suitable for various cohesive, non-cohesive, asphalt concrete, and
aggregate mixtures.
It’s also suitable for roadbed stabilized soil and other road surface
materials. After the work of a road roller, the road material becomes more
compact, and the road surface becomes smoother. Whether it’s road
construction or other projects requiring leveled roadbeds, road rollers are
indispensable.
Road rollers can be classified in different ways. If classified by working
weight, for the most intuitive representation, the current road machinery
industry often divides them into small road rollers (10 tons and below) and
large road rollers (10 tons and above).
2. What is a grader? XCMG
![]()
A grader is a versatile modern construction equipment suitable for leveling
ground surfaces in foundation engineering. It can also be used for ditch
digging, slope scraping, bulldozing, loosening soil, snow removal, etc. It is
essential for the construction of high-grade highways, railways, airports,
ports, dams, industrial sites, and farmland leveling.
3. Difference between a grader and a road roller XCMG
(1) Grader: Used to level loose base layers, such as backfill soil,
lime-soil, etc.
(2) Road roller: Used to compact already leveled road surfaces and ground
surfaces, including backfill soil, lime-soil, dry-mixed concrete, asphalt
concrete, etc.
Single-drum road roller: Commonly used with a vibration function to fully
compact backfill soil, lime-soil, etc.
Double-drum road roller: Commonly used static roller to compact and level
road surfaces.
4. XCMG Case procedure:
① A grader is used to level excavated roadbeds, backfill soil, and
evenly mix lime-soil.
② After leveling, the roadbed is fully compacted using a vibratory roller
(potholes are repaired and then compacted again).
③ Once the compacted soil meets design requirements, dry-mixed concrete is
laid, or gravel is sprinkled, and asphalt concrete is spread using a
paver.
The asphalt concrete is then compacted using a static roller, and the road
surface is smoothed using a pneumatic tire roller with water (for cooling).
