The Rise of Chinese Pickups: From "Workhorse" to the New Darling of the Global High-End Market

At the start of 2026, the Chinese pickup truck market has delivered a remarkable report card. While experiencing steady growth in the domestic market, overseas exports continue to surge, propelling Chinese pickups onto the global stage like never before. From the Australian outback to European streets, from Latin American mining sites to Southeast Asian construction projects, "Made in China" pickups are redefining the boundaries of this classic vehicle category.

Market Performance: Exports Become the Main Growth Engine, New Energy Vehicles Emerge Strongly

From January to February 2026, the Chinese pickup truck market recorded cumulative sales of 91,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 5.3%, marking a peak for this period in the last five years. Even more noteworthy is the exceptionally strong export performance—cumulative exports reached 50,000 units during the first two months, a surge of 30% year-on-year, with exports accounting for over 50% of total sales. This means that for every two pickups produced in China, one heads to overseas markets.

In February alone, pickup exports totaled 23,000 units, representing 56% of the month's total pickup sales. A host of new Chinese pickup brands have leveraged exports to achieve robust growth, significantly boosting the overseas presence of China's independent pickup manufacturers.

In the new energy sector, pickups are also demonstrating strong momentum. Cumulative sales of new energy pickups from January to February reached 11,000 units, up 5% year-on-year. While this growth rate slightly lags behind fuel-powered pickups, considering the overarching global trend towards electrification, the future potential for new energy pickups is highly promising.

Brand Landscape: Great Wall Leads, Multiple Brands Synergize

Great Wall Pickup: The "King" with 28 Consecutive Years as Sales Leader

As the undisputed leader in the Chinese pickup market, Great Wall Pickup maintained its strong lead at the beginning of 2026. From January to February, Great Wall Pickup's global cumulative sales reached 27,361 units, with February sales hitting 12,011 units globally.

The Great Wall Poer family performed particularly well: February global sales were 9,369 units, marking its 63rd consecutive month exceeding 10,000 sales and retaining its title as China's pickup sales champion. The Great Wall Poer, Fengjun, and King Kong Poer models swept the top three spots in individual model sales, showcasing a powerful product matrix advantage.

In terms of exports, Great Wall Pickup's cumulative overseas sales from January to February reached 11,394 units, a robust increase of 21.1% year-on-year. Currently, Great Wall Pickup has held the top sales position for 28 consecutive years, with cumulative global sales surpassing 2.85 million units.

SAIC Maxus: Leader in High-End Pickup Exports

SAIC Maxus recorded wholesale sales of 10,459 units from January to February, a 6% year-on-year increase, ranking second in the industry and continuing to lead China's high-end pickup exports.

SAIC Maxus's globalization strategy has yielded significant results. On February 25, the new Maxus eTerron 9 (equipped with CATL's 50-degree battery) was launched, featuring comprehensive upgrades for "longer range, faster charging, and extended warranty." More excitingly, the SAIC Maxus eTerron 9 won the "Company Car & Van 2026 Electric Pickup of the Year" award in the UK, a testament to the robust capabilities of Chinese high-end pickup products.

Zhengzhou Nissan and JAC Motors: Leading in Growth Rate

Zhengzhou Nissan delivered impressive results in February, selling 4,525 pickups, a staggering year-on-year increase of 60.6%. Cumulative sales from January to February reached 8,578 units, up 92% year-on-year, leading the entire industry in growth rate.

JAC Motors also performed commendably, with cumulative pickup sales of 9,195 units from January to February, an 8.7% year-on-year increase, ranking third in the industry.

Foton Motor and Geely Radar: Breakthroughs in the New Energy Sector

Foton Motor's cumulative pickup sales from January to February reached 6,904 units, a year-on-year increase of 23.1%. Its high-end pickup, the TUNLAND V9, won the International Pickup Award (IPUA) 2026, a significant reflection of Chinese products gaining international recognition in the high-end commercial vehicle segment.

Geely Radar, as a new force in new energy pickups, sold 1,363 electric pickups in February, a year-on-year increase of 45%. Cumulative sales from January to February reached 2,604 units, up 40.5% year-on-year, solidifying its position in the electric pickup niche.

Overseas Journey: From Product Export to Full-System Globalization

The globalization of Chinese pickups has moved beyond simple product exports, evolving towards full value chain localization encompassing R&D, production, supply, sales, and service.

Great Wall Motor has established complete vehicle production bases with full process capabilities in multiple overseas markets. In 2025, its Brazilian factory officially commenced production. As a fully-process production facility serving Latin America, it enabled the localization of high-value models like the 2.4T Great Wall Poer. Culturally, Great Wall Pickup actively integrates into diverse global cultural ecosystems, sponsoring top-tier world surfing events, participating in the New Beach One-Mile Beach Run in South Africa, and supporting the Rally Mobil in Peru, truly achieving a leap from "selling vehicles" to "integrating into lifestyles."

Foton Motor is also accelerating its overseas plan. In 2025, Foton's factory in Brazil was completed and began production, while its South African factory achieved CKD localization for heavy trucks and pickups. This February, Dangote Group, Africa's largest industrial conglomerate, signed an order with Foton for over a thousand logistics vehicles, marking Foton's transformation in the African market from simply "selling products" to providing "clean energy logistics solutions."

BAIC Group as a whole also demonstrated strong performance. In the first two months of the year, the Group's overseas sales exceeded 55,000 units, up 25% year-on-year. In the European market, BAIC Foton orders surpassed 2,100 units, a 136% increase, ranking first in exports of Chinese-brand pickups and light trucks to Europe. Even more noteworthy is Foton's securing of a large order for hybrid pickups in Italy, with its new energy products obtaining EU WVTA certification.

Product Evolution: From Cost-Effectiveness to Technology and Branding

Chinese pickup products are transitioning from an early advantage in "cost-effectiveness" towards a high-quality export model driven by "technology + branding."

Technological innovation has become a core competitiveness. In the new energy sector, BAIC Foton has innovatively launched an integrated green energy ecosystem combining "vehicle + charging pile + solar power + storage + load + intelligence," exploring business models like battery swapping and battery banks to provide overseas users with comprehensive lifecycle services.

Product structure is continuously being optimized. Take, for example, the first pickup soon to be launched by the 212 brand, the "Explorer 01." With a body length of 5469mm and a wheelbase of 3488mm, it directly enters the full-size pickup category. Off-road parameters including an approach angle of 42 degrees and a departure angle of 26 degrees, coupled with a 3-ton towing capacity, demonstrate the determination of Chinese pickups to advance into the high-end, hardcore market segment.

Export Product Mix: Diesel Remains Dominant, New Energy Rises Rapidly

In terms of the types of export products, diesel pickup trucks are definitely the main force, with monthly exports around 15,000 units, primarily due to core overseas demand for heavy-duty hauling capabilities. Gasoline pickups see monthly exports of approximately 6,000 units, catering to users who also consider daily household use. Most notably, new energy pickups are nearing 4,000 units in monthly exports. Although total volume lags behind diesel models, their rapid ascent cannot be ignored, reflecting the continuously rising global consumer demand for environmental friendliness and intelligence.

Future Outlook: The Globalization Path of Chinese Pickups

2026 marks the first year of China's 15th Five-Year Plan. For the pickup industry, the penetration rate of new energy will continue to rise, and competition in overseas markets will intensify.

On the opportunity side, infrastructure demand in countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative remains strong, and the global low-carbon transition is driving demand for electrified commercial vehicles. Leveraging key technological leadership in new energy and intelligence, a complete industrial chain, and economies of scale, Chinese commercial vehicles are now equipped with the capability to compete comprehensively on a global scale.

On the challenge side, overseas service networks remain relatively weak. In some emerging markets, after-sales maintenance and parts supply systems are imperfect, affecting the user experience. Furthermore, the international recognition of Chinese homegrown brands still needs improvement. In mature markets like Europe and North America, Chinese pickups still face intense competition from Japanese and European brands.

As industry insiders note, the oversea journey of Chinese pickup manufacturers is a microcosm of the transformation of China's manufacturing industry. When encountering bottlenecks in the domestic market, going global is not just about finding new growth points; it is also a way to force oneself to improve product quality and technological levels. These Chinese pickups sold far overseas are not just means of transportation; they are the best testament to the wisdom and resilience of Chinese manufacturing.

Looking to the future, only by continuing to insist on localized plan, value-based competition, and brand-oriented development can Chinese pickups navigate steadily and achieve long-term success in a complex and volatile global market. Amidst the wave of electrification, the collision between established and emerging forces has just begun. When Chinese brands perfect cost-effectiveness and smart experiences, can the traditional giants hold onto their throne for "heavy-duty work"? The offensive and defensive battle in the pickup market is becoming increasingly worth watching.
